Challenge

Magellan was retained by the City of Hamilton, Ohio to help the City determine the feasibility of developing a fiber-based community broadband network to serve the businesses, residents, local governments, schools, and institutions of the City. A municipal electric provider to 80,000 residents, the City’s fiber-optic network was analyzed to determine how it could expand to become a broadband services network; using an open-access business model. Magellan completed a comprehensive process of needs assessment, technical planning, financial and funds planning and service provider negotiations.

Solution

Magellan helped the City execute the plan to bring new schools online with gigabit broadband. Magellan's implementation team was able to meet strict e-rate funding deadlines to connect local schools with fiber, bringing 100 times more capacity to them at lower rates than they were currently paying.

Success

Additionally, Magellan assisted Hamilton in negotiations for an innovative public-private partnership with a local provider who is using the City's fiber to provide gigabit broadband services to local businesses.
